Dancing with the Stars: Fusions and Marathons What a Combination Recap Week 7 Photos
What an unbelievable evening we had once again. The dances were beyond belief and the scores proved it. Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani placed at the top of the leader board with Shawn Johnson following her. Although Shawn had a perfect score of 30 and Melissa 29.5, Melissa received the perfect 10 for the marathon effort.
Tonight was Fusion night, taking two different dancing styles and performing them to the same music. Len said he would be looking at the nuances which lead to both. He wants to a decent amount of both dances. Bruno commented that the switch between the two dances needs to be smooth, without hesitation.
Apolo Ohno and Karina Smirnoff Cha Cha and Paso Doble to the song “Scream” Usher
Len: “You really came out and attacked it.” He commented that he thought Apolo would come out and play it safe since there are no eliminations this week. “The Cha Cha Cha was crisp and clean and the Paso had some fire.”
Bruno: He called the routine “triumphant and wonderful.” “You are like a wolf with plenty of muscle.”
Carrie Ann: She thought it was amazing to see Apolo push himself so much. “You started strong and ended stronger.” (This had been Karina’s reason for starting with the Cha Cha Cah and ending with the Paso Doble.) His walking on his knees toward Karina was fabulous to watch and he received praise from the judges for his efforts.
Individual score: 27 Marathon: 6 Total: 33
Emmit Smith and Cheryl Burke Emmitt danced a Rumba and a Samba to the song “Fine By Me” —Andy Grammar
Cheryl had a talk with Emmitt about not missing any steps this week. Emmitt went home to visit his family and had a very nice visit. I enjoyed seeing him with his family and it really seemed to lift his spirits.
I love the pink outfits.
Bruno: He praised Emmitt for his great handling of the difficult transitions between the two dances. “You did it with ease…it was wonderful.”
Len: He also thought Emmitt did well and liked how he went back and forth between the two dances.
Carrie Ann: She liked the transitions but felt his upper body was a somewhat off.
Score: 27.5 Marathon 7 Total: 34
Kirstie Alley and Maks Chmerkovski danced a Quickstep and a Samba to the song “Sir Duke” —Stevie Wonder
Maks told Kirstie, “You are amazing just go out and do it.”
All three judges enjoyed the dance and praised her for her efforts but all thought that there were some issues.
Carrie Ann: She told her that the Quick Step started out well, but she told her she lost her timing in her transition to the Samba, which seemed to throw her off.
Len: He mentioned that she had a “few issues”, but he said, “I thought it was an admirable effort, so well done to you.”
Bruno: He loved how she turned Cinderella into a stripper. He agreed the technique was lacking but, “whatever you do is is always entertaining.
Score: 24 Marathon: 4 Total: 28 Giving her the lowest score overall.
Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovski Foxtrot danced a Cha-Cha-Cha to the song “Don’t Stop” —Gin Wigmore
Kelly and Val talked about their incredible friendship and they both want it to last after this season. Val also said he is so happy because he has never been this far on Dancing with the Stars before.
Kelly stated, they are both intense, they care about each other, and they are very passionate about what they do.
Bruno: That was plenty of flash and plenty of dash, and you got that booty working overtime.”
Len: He felt she kept the Cha Cha crisp and despite a small moment where she lost her balance early on in the routine, it was lovely and well done.
Carrie Ann: She liked the balance and the elegance and said she had good transitions.
Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani danced a Tango and a Cha-Cha-Cha to the song “Die Young” —Ke$Y
Melissa and Tony lit up the dance floor. I loved how they came out in all black, and then has they made the transition to the Samba, the black came off and they both sparkled. Melissa won the Swing Marathon, which gave her an additional 10 points. The reason she and Tony won, is because they kept up their dancing and energy during the entire 4 minutes. Kelly and Val would rest in between the segments they danced.
Bruno: “The mistress of the tango, into a sexy Cha Cha. You were on fire, you’ve never been sexier…The shapes in the tango were absolutely fantastic.”
Carrie Ann: “You are a star.” And she loved the super sexy Cha Cha.
Len: He thought it was beautiful and not half and half of two dances, but the constant change between the two. He loved the way it was put together.
Shawn Johnson and Mark Ballas danced a Tango and a Paso Doble to the song “Livin’ On A Prayer” —Bon Jovi
Last week we learned that Derek Hough would not be dancing this week due to an injury that was reasserting itself. Shawn and Mark received a perfect score. It was fabulous, awesome, any wonderful word you can choose. Mark had been Shawn’s partner her first time around, and they won the Mirror Ball. So, they have some experience being together.
Carrie Ann: “That was a textbook definition of fusion..”
Len: He called it fantastic!
Bruno: He called her, “The Queen of the night.” And he added, “As fusions go, that was flawless.”
Derek announced that he will be back next week.
Score: 30 Marathon: 8 Total: 38, putting her in very close to Melissa. At this point, I would expect either Melissa or Shawn to win this season. They both get better, while the others continue to struggle sometimes.
Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd Gilles & Peta danced a Argentine Tango and a Samba to the song “When I Get You Alone” —Robin Thicke
Gilles told us he was hoping for a perfect score but he fell short. But all of the judges praised his routine.
I loved his white suit and his sexiness.
Len: He loved the routine and thought the Argentine Tango was fantastic.
Bruno: He called the routine sulty, intense, and exciting.”
Carrie Ann: “Wow.” But, she still found fault with his hands. She seems to think he is making movements, which I suppose are distracting. So, he did not receive the score he hoped for.
Score: 28.5 Marathon: 5 Total: 33.5
